New UN-backed centres opened in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo around August 3, 2026, as confirmed Ebola cases climbed over the preceding weekend of August 1 and 2, United Nations News reported.
The current outbreak is the largest ever recorded in the DRC, according to United Nations News. The disease is described as highly contagious.
The centres are designed to respond to the rising caseload in the east of the country, UN News said.
