FDA approves Moderna's mFLUSIVA as first mRNA flu vaccine

The FDA approved Moderna's mRNA-based influenza vaccine on August 6, 2026, clearing the first flu shot built on mRNA technology to reach the U.S. market.

The vaccine, named mFLUSIVA, is authorized for adults aged 50 and older, according to Ars Technica. NPR reported that Moderna designed the shot with older adults as the primary target population.

Ars Technica described the FDA's review of mFLUSIVA as a rollercoaster process before the agency granted approval. The vaccine will be available for the upcoming flu season, NPR said.
