A Savannah, Georgia, resident has been handed a federal prison term of more than 30 years, the U.S. Department of Justice announced. The sentence stems from a conviction on charges of unlawfully possessing a firearm.

The U.S. Department of Justice said the man was designated an armed career criminal, a classification that carries enhanced federal penalties under sentencing guidelines. That status played a central role in the length of the term imposed.

The conviction itself centered on illegal firearm possession. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the Savannah resident will serve in excess of three decades behind bars as a result of that offense. The armed career criminal designation, combined with the underlying charge, produced the sentence exceeding 30 years that federal authorities announced.
