A convicted felon has been sentenced to more than 10 years in federal prison for unlawful possession of a firearm, the U.S. Department of Justice announced.

The defendant was already a convicted felon at the time the offense took place, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Federal law prohibits individuals with prior felony convictions from possessing firearms, and the charge in this case centered on exactly that violation.

The U.S. Department of Justice confirmed that the prison term handed down exceeded 10 years. The department made the sentencing public through an official announcement.

The case resulted in a sentence of more than a decade behind bars for a defendant whose prior felony record made firearm possession a federal offense, the U.S. Department of Justice stated.
