A man who spent two decades leading a Brooklyn faculty union has pleaded guilty to theft and wire fraud, the U.S. Department of Justice announced.

The defendant, Carbone, served as president of Local 1460, the United Federation of College Teachers chapter that represents faculty at Pratt Institute. Pratt Institute is in Brooklyn, New York. Carbone held that office from 2003 to 2023, according to the Justice Department.

The theft took place over roughly 12 years. The Justice Department said Carbone diverted more than $290,000 in union funds for personal use between 2011 and 2023. Among the personal expenses were restaurant bills and travel costs, the agency reported.

Carbone faced charges of both theft and wire fraud, to which he entered guilty pleas, the Justice Department confirmed. The stolen amount exceeded $290,000 in total, taken from the union whose members he was elected to represent at the Brooklyn art and design school.
