A former financial officer for Tomball Independent School District has been charged with wire fraud for allegedly stealing close to $1 million from the district, the U.S. Department of Justice announced.

The suspect is 50 years old and lives in Tomball, according to the Justice Department. The agency identified Tomball Independent School District as the alleged victim in the case.

The U.S. Department of Justice said the alleged fraud involved approximately $996,174. The total scheme amounted to roughly $1 million, the agency reported.

The suspect previously held a financial officer role at the school district before the alleged theft came to light. The wire fraud count was filed against the individual in connection with the scheme, per the Justice Department.
