Two earthquakes, measuring magnitude 6.6 and 6.3, struck within one second of each other northeast of Norsup, Vanuatu on October 8, 2026, affecting people across the region, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The stronger quake hit at 09:00:08 UTC, with its epicenter 105 km northeast of Norsup at coordinates 15.484°S, 168.177°E. The second quake registered at 09:00:07 UTC, placing its epicenter 102 km northeast of Norsup at 15.541°S, 168.189°E. Both events occurred at a depth of 10.00 km (6.21 mi), the USGS said.
The USGS "Did You Feel It?" system recorded a maximum reported intensity of III for the magnitude 6.3 event, based on one report submitted to the agency.
