Super Typhoon Bavi made landfall on Monday morning local time, bringing destructive winds and flooding to Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, according to NPR.

BBC News reported that Bavi was packing winds near 290 km/h (180 mph) with gusts of 350 km/h as it moved over the islands. The National Weather Service said Rota, the southernmost inhabited island in the Northern Mariana Islands, was taking a direct hit, BBC reported.

NPR reported that the eye passed directly over Rota, about 40 miles northeast of Guam. By Monday afternoon local time, the storm was pulling away from the Marianas, though intense winds continued and the National Weather Service listed storm intensity at 175 mph.

Authorities had issued typhoon warnings for Guam, Rota, Tinian and Saipan, NPR reported. Local governments opened emergency shelters that were nearing capacity, while severe outages affected Guam and Saipan and flooded roads and storm debris were reported in the streets.
