OpenAI banned multiple accounts tied to a criminal operation in Cambodia on August 4, 2026, cutting off the group's use of ChatGPT to run investment fraud, romance scams, gambling schemes, and impersonation attacks.

The Record reported that a tip from WhatsApp led OpenAI to the operation. The scam centers were based in Cambodia, and Indian nationals were among those targeted. The operation was also linked to human trafficking, The Record said.

According to OpenAI News, the schemes included investment fraud, romance scams, gambling operations, and impersonation, all supported through ChatGPT accounts that OpenAI has since banned.
