A Jamaican national who ran a multi-year sweepstakes fraud scheme against elderly Americans was sentenced to 66 months in federal prison, the U.S. Department of Justice announced.
United States District Judge Joan M. Azrack imposed the sentence on Adrian Lawrence in federal court in Central Islip. Lawrence, who operated under the alias "Mastermind," had pleaded guilty in December 2023 to conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud.
The Justice Department said Lawrence was originally arrested in Jamaica and later extradited to the United States to face charges. His scheme ran over multiple years and focused on defrauding elderly U.S. citizens through false sweepstakes promises.
Separate from the prison term, Judge Azrack ordered Lawrence to pay $5.4 million in restitution to his victims.
