A former South Carolina sheriff has been sentenced to 41 months in federal prison on public corruption charges, the U.S. Department of Justice reported. The sentencing was held in Greenville, South Carolina.

Charles Wright, 61, of Wellford, South Carolina, previously held the office of Spartanburg County sheriff. A jury found him guilty on three counts, according to the Justice Department. Those counts included conspiracy to commit theft from federally funded programs, as well as a separate conspiracy charge tied to wire fraud. Wright was also convicted of obtaining controlled substances through misrepresentation.

The Justice Department said the 41-month federal prison term was handed down following Wright's convictions on all three charges. Wellford is a city in Spartanburg County, in the northwestern part of South Carolina.

The former sheriff's prison sentence caps a federal prosecution that produced guilty verdicts on corruption and drug-related misrepresentation counts, the Justice Department confirmed.
