USGS initially put the quake's magnitude at 7.0, then revised it to 6.6. The two measurements also differed on the epicenter's distance from Tadine, placing it at 68 km in the first reading and 80 km in the second. Tadine is a locality in New Caledonia, a French territory in the southwestern Pacific.
Depth estimates also varied between the two USGS readings. One placed the quake at 17.10 km (10.63 miles) below the surface, while the other recorded a depth of 10.00 km (6.21 miles). Epicenter coordinates differed as well, with one reading giving 21.246°S, 168.453°E and the other 21.298°S, 168.610°E.
The USGS "Did You Feel It?" system received one public report for the event, with a maximum reported intensity of III on that scale.
