The BBC filed a motion on August 14, 2026, asking a US court to authorize subpoenas against Donald Trump Jr, Ivanka Trump, and Jared Kushner as part of its defense against President Trump's defamation lawsuit.
The lawsuit stems from a Panorama documentary about the January 6, 2021 insurrection, according to BBC News. Trump sued the broadcaster over the program's content.
The BBC is seeking testimony and records from all three individuals relating to events of January 6, 2021. Donald Trump Jr and Ivanka Trump are Trump's two eldest children, and Kushner is his son-in-law, The Guardian reported.
BBC lawyers argue the three family members have direct insight into what Trump intended when he spoke near the US Capitol that day. In the motion, BBC lawyers said Trump's family members "have personal knowledge" of his intentions in the speech he gave outside the US Capitol on 6 January 2021.
The subpoena request is a component of the BBC's broader defense strategy in the case, The Guardian said.
