Rhys Phillips will become the Bank of England's next Chief Cashier and Director of Notes, the central bank said, with the appointment taking effect on 19 October 2026.

Governor Andrew Bailey announced the selection. Phillips will take on both titles simultaneously, combining responsibility for the chief cashier role with oversight of the notes directorate.

The Chief Cashier position carries a long tradition at the Bank of England. The holder's signature appears on banknotes issued by the institution, making the role one of the most publicly visible within the bank's operations. Phillips will assume both designations, Chief Cashier and Director of Notes, when he steps into the post in October 2026.

The Bank of England said Bailey made the announcement. No reason for the appointment timing was given, and no details about Phillips's current role or background were included in the bank's statement. The start date of 19 October 2026 is the only scheduling information the bank provided.
