Sen. Ron Wyden, Democrat of Oregon, sent a letter on July 27, 2026, calling on federal agencies to remove outdated, public-facing VPNs and replace them with zero-trust architecture.
Wyden, a member of the Intelligence Committee, described attacks on the federal government tied to legacy VPNs as "devastating." CyberScoop was first to report the letter.
According to The Record, Wyden wants CISA to lead the government-wide effort to phase out obsolete VPNs, with OMB and NIST participating in that work.
