A federal indictment unsealed on October 22, 2026, charges Virginia state senator L Louise Lucas with leading a criminal marijuana distribution enterprise, along with drug trafficking, money laundering, fraud, and firearms offenses.
The indictment names 7 defendants in total, according to The Guardian. Lucas is one of them; several of the remaining six are her relatives. Lucas surrendered to authorities the same day the indictment was unsealed, a Justice Department spokesperson confirmed.
Federal authorities allege Lucas ran an operation that acquired marijuana in bulk for distribution and then funneled the resulting profits through money laundering schemes, the U.S. Department of Justice stated in an announcement of the charges.
The Guardian described Lucas as one of Virginia's most powerful Democrats and a vocal critic of Trump.
