The UN Security Council convened on October 16, 2026 to address Sudan's war, which United Nations News described as both the world's largest hunger crisis and the world's largest displacement crisis.

Drone strikes have been killing civilians in El Obeid and in the Blue Nile region, according to United Nations News. The outlet also reported that famine risk is spreading across Darfur and across Kordofan.

United Nations News said ambassadors at the meeting were expected to call for a ceasefire, demand safe humanitarian aid access, and push for an end to weapons flows into Sudan. Those weapons flows, the outlet reported, have been identified as fuelling the conflict.
