United Nations News reported that the increase began after late February 2026, which is when a US-Israeli bombing campaign started. Türk did not characterize the relationship between the two events as causal, but noted the timing in his statement.
According to BBC News, 56 people were executed on national security-related charges from March 2026 onward. Of those, 27 cases were connected to protests that took place in January 2026.
United Nations News said Türk also flagged a parallel rise in death sentences handed down during the same period. His August 5 statement called on Iranian authorities to halt the use of capital punishment as a tool against political opposition and public dissent.
