David Owori, captain of Sports Club Villa and a Uganda national team player, died in hospital after suspected robbers beat him near his home in Kampala on the night of August 4, 2026. He was 27.
The attack took place in Makindye division, a part of the Ugandan capital. According to The Guardian, the robbers were after Owori's mobile phone and other belongings. When he resisted, they struck him with paving stones.
BBC News reported that police described the attackers as suspected robbers. Owori was beaten to death and later died from his injuries in hospital.
Sports Club Villa competes in the Uganda Premier League, and Owori also wore the captain's armband for the national side. The Guardian said the Ugandan football community entered a period of mourning following his death.
