President Donald Trump said on Tuesday, October 28, 2026, that his administration is "terminating" Biden-era regulations on methane emissions from oil and gas operations, making the announcement at a rally in Lubbock, Texas.
The rules being ended required oil and gas companies to limit large methane leaks, according to The Guardian. Methane is a greenhouse gas that warms the planet, NPR reported.
Trump said the policy change would save consumers and energy producers $45 billion and would unlock 210 million barrels of oil. The Guardian reported that 210 million barrels is roughly equivalent to about 10 days of U.S. petroleum consumption.
Critics warned the rollback poses a danger to the climate, The Guardian said.
