Christa Pike, a Tennessee death-row inmate, regained consciousness and began speaking after surviving a state execution attempt, her attorneys announced on October 6, 2026.
Tennessee authorities tried to execute Pike on September 30, 2026, administering two doses of pentobarbital. The attempt failed. Pike was left unconscious and on a ventilator before recovering enough to speak, NBC News reported. She is now receiving treatment at a hospital in Tennessee, handcuffed and shackled to her bed despite severe damage to her arms, according to The Guardian.
Her attorneys released a statement describing the situation: "Against all odds, Christa Pike is conscious, speaking and continues to receive critical medical care. Despite the severe damage she endured to her arms, she is still handcuffed and shackled to the bed. Her recovery is medically unprecedented. Her prognosis remains unclear but, at a minimum, we expect a long recovery."
