María del Carmen Abascal, the 87-year-old Spanish woman whose forced removal from her Madrid apartment set off protests across Spain, died on October 7, 2026, while hospitalized, NPR reported.
Abascal had lived in the apartment for more than 70 years before being carried out on a stretcher in September 2026. A union announced her death, BBC News reported.
The eviction drew demonstrations throughout Spain and, according to NPR, triggered a political crisis in the country.
