A Russian missile and drone assault on Kyiv early Monday left at least ten people dead and dozens wounded, according to NPR. The Guardian put the death toll at a minimum of nine.
Tymur Tkachenko, who leads the military administration for the Kyiv region, confirmed 46 people were injured in the attack. Five of those wounded were children, he said. "Nine deaths and 46 wounded have now been confirmed as a result of the Russian attack (including five wounded children). Sadly, this is not the final toll. Rescue operations are still ongoing," Tkachenko said, as quoted by The Guardian.
NPR reported that Russia carried out the strikes in waves. Apartment blocks and other buildings sustained heavy damage, The Guardian said.
The Guardian also reported that this was the second major assault on Kyiv and its surrounding area in less than a week. The previous attack was described by The Guardian as the deadliest on Kyiv this year.
With rescue operations still underway at the time the initial figures were released, Tkachenko indicated the casualty count could rise further.
