A worker at the Irkutsk Antiplague Research Institute of Siberia and the Far East died on October 2, 2026, from severe pneumonia whose cause remains unconfirmed, the World Health Organization said. The WHO learned of the death through media reports on the same day.
The worker had been hospitalized on September 29, 2026. Pneumonic plague was initially suspected, with occupational exposure inside the laboratory considered the likely route of infection.
After the media reports surfaced, WHO asked Russian authorities to verify the facts. Russia's IHR National Focal Point confirmed the death and said no plague case had been registered recently in Irkutsk Oblast. Russian authorities also stated that no biosecurity incidents had occurred at the facility, an account that contradicted earlier media coverage of the laboratory.
Samples from the deceased and all known contacts were screened for multiple pathogens, including those classified as high-threat. Every result for those pathogens came back negative. No additional cases of severe pneumonia connected to this patient were found, and all contacts remained without symptoms throughout the follow-up period. Contacts received medical monitoring either at healthcare facilities or at home, and quarantine measures were put in place at the treating hospital.
WHO said it found no evidence of ongoing transmission linked to the event. Preventive and control measures were applied under Russia's national sanitary legislation. The organization said it will continue monitoring the situation for further public health implications, and a confirmed diagnosis for the deceased worker has not been established.
