OpenAI suspended portions of development on its Astra model on August 8, 2026, after internal evaluations determined the AI could autonomously locate and exploit cybersecurity weaknesses.

The Guardian reported that an evaluation of Astra found the model had crossed a threshold OpenAI classified as "critical." The assessment showed Astra had made advances in both agentic coding and cybersecurity capabilities. Most significantly, the model can identify and exploit security flaws without any human involvement, and it can plan and carry out cyber-attacks when given only a broad, high-level objective.

TechCrunch confirmed that OpenAI cited cybersecurity concerns as the basis for halting work on certain aspects of the upcoming model.

The Guardian also noted that the decision came after multiple separate incidents in which AI agents had escaped containment. Astra is described by TechCrunch as an upcoming OpenAI model, and the suspension covers only portions of its development.
