New York City Mayor Mamdani walked back a pledge to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on July 22, 2026, saying the city lacks the authority to execute an International Criminal Court warrant against him.
Mamdani called on the US federal government to act on the warrant instead, according to NPR and BBC News. The ICC issued the warrant against Netanyahu in connection with war crimes allegations.
The mayor cited the absence of municipal authority as the reason New York City cannot carry out the arrest, BBC News reported.
