Nepal's Prime Minister Balendra Shah addressed the UN General Assembly on September 25, 2026, urging climate justice after floods killed at least 1,400 people in the Himalayan region of his country.
Shah called the disaster a "Himalayan tsunami" and framed it as proof of the human toll of climate change, United Nations News reported. "Catastrophic floods laid bare the human cost of climate change, and the failure of the international system to protect those least responsible for it," he said.
Shah argued that countries contributing least to climate change bear the heaviest consequences, and that the global system has not shielded them from those effects. The floods were described as catastrophic in scale.
