Liberia has agreed to take in 1,200 people deported from the United States who hold citizenship in neither country, the government confirmed on August 19, 2026.

The deportees come from a range of regions. NPR reported that the group includes nationals from African countries, as well as people from North America, South America, and the Caribbean.

A first group of 20 was expected to arrive on August 20, 2026, according to NPR.

Liberia described the arrangement as humanitarian in nature. BBC News reported that the government said it is receiving no financial compensation under the deal.
