A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Flores island in eastern Indonesia on Sunday, August 16, 2026, killing at least 20 people and triggering a tsunami warning, according to NPR.
The quake hit at 5:58am local time, with its epicenter 68 kilometers north-northwest of Ende. Ende is a city in East Nusa Tenggara province. The US Geological Survey placed the depth at 10 kilometers, The Guardian reported.
Buildings collapsed and residents in the affected region fled in panic. The death toll climbed from five, as BBC News reported in an earlier update, to at least 20 in the most recent count. NPR noted that the Flores region has a history of deadly earthquakes.
