TechCrunch reported that concerns about misinformation drove the removal, with the launch and retraction both happening within roughly 24 hours. An unnamed critic quoted by NPR said, "The opportunities for abuse and disinfo are literally boundless." Journalists, human rights advocates, and open-source intelligence analysts were among those who objected to the feature.
The Financial Times noted that security experts warned generative AI tools of this kind risk eroding trust in satellite imagery, which analysts rely on to verify conflict damage and other incidents on the ground.
Google has not announced any plans to reintroduce the tool.
