A federal court on July 21, 2026, granted final approval to a $1.5 billion settlement between Anthropic and a class of authors whose copyrighted works were used to train the company's AI models.
According to Ars Technica, only 350 authors chose to opt out of the settlement. The same outlet reported that Anthropic blocked some authors from opting out at the last minute.
TechCrunch noted that while the settlement resolves this particular case, it leaves open the broader legal question of whether using copyrighted material to train AI models is permissible.
