Ezra Jin, the founder of Zion Church, has been released from a Chinese prison and arrived in the United States on Friday evening, BBC News reported.
The Guardian described Zion Church as one of China's most prominent underground churches. Jin's release came after Donald Trump made a direct appeal to Xi Jinping on his behalf, according to BBC News.
Jin was among dozens of Zion Church members detained during a crackdown that took place in October, The Guardian reported. That crackdown targeted house churches across China.
After landing in the United States, Jin was reunited with members of his family, The Guardian said. According to The Guardian, his family was overwhelmed with joy at the reunion.
Jin's arrival in the United States follows his release from detention in China, BBC News reported. Trump's direct appeal to Xi Jinping preceded that release, BBC News said.
