California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced on October 19, 2026, that the state will receive $6 million from 23andMe's bankruptcy proceedings to settle allegations that the company failed to adequately protect customer data.

A 2023 breach at 23andMe exposed the genetic and personal information of 6.9 million customers, more than 855,000 of whom were Californians, according to The Guardian. The settlement resolves the state's claims over that failure, The Record reported.

23andMe's assets were sold for $305 million to TTAM Research Institute, a nonprofit controlled by Anne Wojcicki, who co-founded the company, The Guardian said. California had sought to block that sale, arguing it violated the state's Genetic Information Privacy Act and that consumers had not given express consent to the transfer of their data. That effort was unsuccessful.

The $6 million payment to California comes out of the bankruptcy estate.
