Twelve people died after a bus carrying Polish Catholic pilgrims veered off the M3 motorway in Hungary and overturned at 1am local time on August 16, 2026, according to The Guardian. At least ten others were left in serious condition, and BBC News said dozens of passengers sustained serious injuries.

Local police said the bus left the straight road, entered a ditch, and then rolled over. The crash happened near the town of Mezőkeresztes. The group had been returning from Bosnia and Herzegovina when the accident occurred.

The driver survived and was taken into custody. Initial reports pointed to the driver having fallen asleep as the probable cause of the crash, The Guardian said.
