The World Health Organization reports that a Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak centered in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has spread to Uganda and France, with more than 1,400 confirmed cases recorded.
As of July 1, the WHO said, the DRC had logged 1,460 confirmed cases of Bundibugyo virus disease, with 452 deaths among those patients. The organization described transmission in the DRC as sustained and the case count as rising rapidly.
Uganda confirmed 20 cases as of July 2, according to the WHO. Two of those patients died, and the country also recorded one probable case that proved fatal. The WHO said Uganda's infections include both imported cases and secondary spread among close contacts and healthcare workers, with all transmission traced to the DRC. No new cases have been reported in Uganda since June 21, 2026, the WHO noted.
France recorded one case involving a medical doctor who had returned from the DRC, the WHO reported.
The WHO said it and its partners are working alongside national authorities in both affected countries on response efforts. A regional preparedness and prioritization framework is guiding readiness activities across the African Region, the organization added.
Across the DRC and Uganda combined, the outbreak has produced more than 1,480 confirmed cases and over 450 deaths.
