Amber Guyger, the former Dallas police officer convicted of murdering Botham Jean, walked out of a Texas prison on the morning of October 16, 2026, after serving seven years of a 10-year sentence.

The Texas board of pardons and paroles approved her release roughly two weeks before that date, around October 1, 2026, The Guardian reported. Guyger was 38 at the time of her release.

Jean's family opposed the early release, according to The Guardian. Guyger shot Jean in 2018 after entering his apartment in Dallas. NBC News reported that Jean lived in the same apartment complex as Guyger.
